Mel Brooks’s irrepressible comedy (unbelievably, his directorial debut) is built from a 24-carat conceit: a seedy theatrical producer (Zero Mostel) and his new accountant (Gene Wilder) decide to stage a Broadway flop because, legally, they could keep the money put up by investors. This lean and tense adaptation of James Dashner’s young adult sci-fi series makes good on its wildly intriguing premise, with a hint of Lord of the Flies. VLĪ group of teenage boys live in a meadow at the heart of a giant labyrinth: no one knows why they’re there, or what lies beyond the maze’s shifting walls, until the arrival of new 16-year-old Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) starts a sudden push for freedom. Nicky Campbell, himself a survivor of abuse, is a sympathetic reporter of this story where, he says, he wants to celebrate the band’s achievement but also examine how their dreams were tainted. As ever with fantasy dramas such as this, CGI plays a starring role, but the leads put in committed performances and it has an air of camp enjoyment. Later, we see Yennefer attempting to teach Ciri to control her magic, before it goes horribly wrong when she becomes separated from her guardians once again. Those familiar with the original stories will know that in Time of Contempt, the book on which this series is based, we’re back in the Continent among all its monsters, political scheming and many dangers that lurk there as Geralt and his lover, sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), seek to protect Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) from the looming threat of the Wild Hunt. Safe to say, many of the show’s fans are not happy about the change. Amid rumours of creative differences between the Superman star and the show’s writers, this will be Cavill’s last before Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth (brother of Thor star Chris) assumes the role in the fourth season. Henry Cavill fans should savour the British actor as monster slayer Geralt of Rivia (aka The Witcher) in this hugely popular fantasy series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. ![]()
